Narcotics Control Bureau,
the national nodal agency for drug law enforcement, held a seminarin
collaboration with Uttarakhand State AIDS Control Society (USAICS) at the World
Integrity Center (WIC), Dehradun on the occasion of 26th June-International
Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, to spread awareness
against drug-abuse amongst the society.
The program was graced by eminent
panelists from different walks of life which included the District Magistrate
ShriRavinath Raman, SSP Dehradun ShriPushpakJyoti, Superintendent of NCB
Dehradun Shri Ravi Rana, Dr. RajendraPandey (Addl. Project Director, USAICS),
Shri Sanjay Gangwar (Counselor, NavinKiran Drug Counselling& Rehabilitation
Center) and Shri Jay Singh Rawat (Senior Journalist and Author ). The audience comprised around 200 people from
various walks of life, who had gathered to contemplate on the global concern of
increasing drug abuse in the society.
Shri Ravi Kumar Rana,
Superintendent, NCB set the agenda for the seminar by highlighting the various
issues pertaining to drug abuse in the modern society- nature and scope of the
problem, the trends and patterns, vulnerable youth, increasing problem in
schools and colleges, role of parents and society. This was followed by the District
Magistrate who provided insights on how the civil society and law enforcement
can mitigate their different perceptions and procedures to work for a common
goal of eradicating drug abuse from the society. The SSP shared some facts and figures on the problem
of drug trafficking in the region, and highlighted the efforts of the Police in
tackling the menace. The USAICS representative deliberated on the links between
drug abuse and HIV. The Drug Rehabilitation expert pointed out the significance
of family ties and the active role which parents and society can play to
counter drug abuse. Senior journalist Jay Singh Rawat expressed his views on
how the media can play the role of a vigilante in overcoming the dangers posed
by drugs.
